The program uses the serial number (or some other property) of the hard drive as license key. This also yields better performance by using the KVM extension on Linux. Explanation: I have a USB hard drive with a database of texts on it, that can be viewed and searched through with a special Windows program.

If you are not limited to ARM and can use x86, then I suggest to check out, its images can be used with a standard QEMU i386 (or x86_64) machine. The default emulator goldfish_armv7 kernel does not even have Host USB enabled.)

Thanks for your reply, I should have mentioned this in the post, i already looked at and downloded powerISO, imdisk, and one more and created virtual. (I have already tried enabling all USB host controllers for the goldfish_armv7 kernel based on Linux 3.4, without luck. Use 'Harddisk volume' as device type, check the box 'Removable media', and leave 'Read-only media' unchecked. It does not seem to be available for ARM devices though, the emulated ARM machine does not have a USB controller. Even if the emulator version is so ancient, there appears to be support for passing USB devices from the host.
